Grammy House Band Plays Metallica’s ‘Master of Puppets’ After Megadeth’s Best Metal Performance Win [Update: Dave Mustaine Responds]
UPDATE: Megadeth's Dave Mustaine has since responded to the incident on Twitter, stating, "Ah, you can't blame 'em for not being able to play Megadeth." See the post below.
Megadeth finally won a well-deserved Grammy for “Dystopia” at tonight’s (Feb. 12) ceremony. But in a somewhat awkward turn of events, the Grammy house band played Metallica’s “Master of Puppets” as Megadeth walked down the aisle to accept their award.
Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine was one of Metallica’s founding members, recording Kill ‘Em All with the thrashers before being booted from the band in 1983. Metallica and Megadeth experienced decades of bad blood between their respective bands until very recently when the hatchet was finally buried. Metallica and Megadeth famously shared the stage together, performing Diamond Head’s “Am I Evil?” at Big 4 shows in 2010 and 2011.
Even though “Master of Puppets” served as an ill-advised celebration song following Megadeth’s Grammy win, Dave Mustaine didn’t seem to mind, playing air guitar to the thrash classic as he walked down the aisle with bassist David Ellefson, guitarist Kiko Loureiro and drummer Dirk Verbeuren.
