The Grand Junction High School's student newspaper, Orange and Black, has received a prestigious award. The award, given out each year by the Journalism Education Association and Quill and Scroll International, recognizes excellence in journalism across the United States and is called the Student Journalism Impact Award.

The content that the newspaper covered that earned them the award was in regard to the condition of the school. According to coverage, Grand Junction High School is in need of funding to keep up with safety measures and other maintenance that is being neglected.

The student newspaper staff was supposed to accept the award at a ceremony in Nashville, but because of the Coronavirus pandemic, the ceremony didn't end up taking place.

I love seeing our local youth succeed in ways like this. Journalism is such an important part of our culture, and to see Grand Junction students so passionate about it at high school age really warms my heart.

It's not clear as to whether or not the ceremony will be rescheduled at a later date, and I certainly hope the cancellation doesn't discourage the students from continuing on the paths that they're on and for those that choose to do so, become successful journalists after high school.
