Today, most people think of mountain biking and starting the Kokopelli Trail system that runs from Fruita to Moab, Utah. There are other popular mountain biking trails located north and south of town.

Historically, Fruita was first populated by the Ute people and first settled by whites in 1882.

Fruita is rich in ancient fossils. In 1900, Elmer Riggs found the first-known Brachiosaurus in an area now known as Riggs Hill.
