Fred Durst: ‘It Was Uneasy for Us to See The People We Really Hated’ Being Limp Bizkit Fans
In an interview with Los Angeles TV station KTLA, Fred Durst opened up about his conflicted relationship with a certain type of Limp Bizkit fan, as well as his love of the movie Revenge of the Nerds. Check out the interview above.
The 44-year-old singer talked about his childhood as a “misfit” and how he originally created the band as a means to explore his love of filmmaking, “Growing up, if you’re someone that was tortured and bullied and just happen to be wearing a target on your back, you know, some people need an outlet. At that time I wanted to be a filmmaker ... I’ll put together a band and then direct music videos but when I got the microphone I figured I had to say something.”
He went on to say the purpose of Limp Bizkit transformed, “I felt like standing up for myself and what I’d gone through. So, it was sort of a revenge against the bullies. But the irony was, the sound was so ferocious that bullies themselves would embrace Limp Bizkit. So, it was uneasy for us to see the people we really hated participating and being fans of the music, alongside the people we were sort of fighting for and standing up for. Over time, you’ve got to let it go and let art be what it’s going to be.”
During the interview, Durst talked more about his misfit and “nerd” tendencies. 'Revenge of the Nerds' actor Curtis Armstrong was also at the KTLA studios the day Durst was there and the singer was blown away by getting to meet him backstage, “He left a big impression on me. I love that film, I found it at the right time in my life. I was a big misfit where I grew up. Abused and bullied a lot and that movie resonated deeply with me ... I told him I’m a huge fan of the impression he left and the character he made and I said, you know, to tell you the truth my aliases in some of my hotel rooms and gamer tags and some of my things online in my nerd word, I use his name as my screen name.”
This Saturday (March 14) Limp Bizkit headline the Epicenter Festival alongside Korn.
