Because of Colorado's rich history, there are a lot of towns that have been around for a long time. In addition, many of Colorado's earliest settlements were mining towns, some of which have been abandoned for one reason or another.

The town of Alta, located ten miles outside of Telluride in western Colorado, was a mining town from the late 1800s to the 1940s. However, it has since been abandoned and is nothing more than a tourist attraction for those willing to make the drive.
