A man escaped from the Teller County Jail in Divide, Colorado on the morning of Friday, August 6th.

Colorado Escapee Description

The man, 37-year-old Chancey Ray Colwell was allegedly working as a trustee at the jail when he escaped. He is described as being 6 feet tall, weighing 185 pounds with hazel eyes and long brown hair.

Teller County Sheriff's Department is on the Hunt

Teller County Sheriff Jason Mikesell says that he is unsure how the prisoner escaped, but authorities are currently tirelessly searching for the man.

In fact, following Colwell’s escape, police immediately began setting up roadblocks in an attempt to catch Colwell in a vehicle before he was able to skip town.

Teller County Jail is New

The Teller County Jail in the town of Divide is fairly new, which may or may not have contributed to Colwell being able to escape with as much ease as he did.

Colwell Was a Trustee at Teller County Jail

According to the Teller County Sheriff’s Office, Colwell was on a cleaning shift as a trustee overnight when he escaped from the jail.

Inmate Committed Numerous Crimes in Colorado

Colwell was serving 34 years in prison for numerous crimes, including a shooting incident involving police which led to a chase, as well as multiple other felonies including attempted murder and assault.

Police eventually found Colwell near the Skaguay Reservoir near the popular gambling town of Cripple Creek where he was taken into custody and transported to the Teller County Jail.
