Interestingly, and perhaps due to the history of prisons in the area, some of which date back over a century, Cañon City seems to have quite a bit of these historic and haunted places, one of which takes up quite a bit of land and is locally known as St. Scholastica.

History of Colorado's St. Scholastica

Originally built in 1881 at 615 Pike Avenue in Cañon City, St. Scholastica originally served as a military school until 1886, it was purchased by a Catholic group in 1889, and became Mount St. Scholastica Academy shortly thereafter.

Despite experiencing a number of changes over time, the campus remained a Catholic school for 111 years but eventually closed down for good in the early 2000s.

Is Colorado's St. Scholastica Haunted?

Like many old, abandoned buildings, there have been numerous claims over the years that St. Scholastica is haunted. As you can see above, ghost hunters have recorded numerous accounts that appear to confirm the presence of paranormal activity.

What's Next for Colorado's St. Scholastica?

Unfortunately, after closing its doors for good in 2006, the St. Scholastica campus has fallen victim to vandalism and is lacking much-needed upkeep and renovations.

However, it would appear that some plans are in place to remove asbestos from the buildings and eventually convert them into luxury apartments as well as affordable living residences.
