A couple out hunting got more than they bargained for outside of Durango recently.

The couple, a man and a woman out hunting bear spotted one and the woman shot it.

The bear, around three years old and weighing over 125 pounds was hit and it scampered off. The couple waited an hour or so then began tracking the animal by following the blood trail.

In a heavily wooded area, they found the wounded bear, and it lunged at the man, biting his hand and leg. The woman reacted by shooting the bear dead.

Once they were able to get away the two went to a nearby hospital so the man could get treatment on the bites, but he did not require hospitalization and was released.

According to Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials, the bear was killed by the woman before going to the hospital.
