Colorado Highest for Catalytic Converter Thefts
The phrase "going zero to one hundred" comes to mind when I hear about how Colorado is the number one state in the nation for catalytic converter thefts in 2021. Except it's not really zero to one hundred. More like 26 to 896 in two years.
A total of 26 catalytic converters were stolen in all of 2019 in the state of Colorado. We are officially halfway through the year 2021 and thefts of this exhaust part have skyrocketed to 896 reported thefts in Colorado. There has been a 559 percent increase in catalytic converter thefts in the state over 2020.
Cars that are being targeted the most are all imports. These models include the Toyota Prius, Toyota 4Runner, Honda Element, Toyota Tacoma, and the Honda Accord.
Other states seeing a massive uptick in catalytic converter thefts include Arizona, Connecticut, Texas, New Jersey, Florida, Washington, Nevada, Oklahoma, and Georgia.
Been Verified states that there have been nearly 26,000 reported catalytic converter thefts in the United States in the first five months of 2021 and an overall 80 percent increase in thefts that were reported last year.
Companies have gone so far as to make catalytic converter anti-theft devices for some of the hardest-hit vehicles. You can protect yourself from becoming a victim of catalytic converter theft by parking your car in a locked garage, parking in a well-lit area, parking near the high pedestrian traffic areas. It is also suggested that you engrave your VIN and phone number into your catalytic converter.
