Keeping Our Children Healthy, Colorado is Not the Best or Worst

Once you become a parent, the health of that child becomes a much bigger priority than you could have ever imagined. We put systems in place like yearly checkups and healthy snacks to do our part. We also trust the health care system to their part.

Turns out certain states do a better job than others of providing cost-effective and highest-quality health care for children.

According to WalletHub's list of 2023’s Best & Worst States for Children's Health Care Colorado isn't the best or the worst.

WalletHub "compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across 33 key metrics. The data set ranges from share of children aged 0 to 17 in excellent or very good health to pediatricians and family doctors per capita."

Coming in at the top is Massachusetts followed by the District of Columbia and Rhode Island. Ranking as the worst states for the health care of children is Mississippi, Texas, and Louisiana. Colorado finds itself as number 15 on the list, which means we are doing better than 36 other states.

WalletHub explains:

• Massachusetts has the lowest share of uninsured children aged 0 to 18, 1.50 percent, which is 7.7 times lower than in Texas, the highest at 11.50 percent.
• The District of Columbia has the lowest share of children aged 0 to 17 with unaffordable medical bills, 3.00 percent, which is 4.9 times lower than in Wyoming, the highest at 14.60 percent.
• The District of Columbia has the most pediatricians per 100,000 residents, 44, which is 22 times more than in Mississippi, the fewest at 2.
• Montana has the lowest share of obese children aged 10 to 17, 10.20 percent, which is 2.5 times lower than in West Virginia, the highest at 26.00 percent.
