Many of us were fortunate to get a school field trip to the capitol building in our younger days, but for most of us, that was a long, long time ago. Maybe it's time to get reacquainted with one of Colorado's most recognizable landmarks.
Some 300,000 people visit the Colorado State Capitol Building every year with about 70,000 touring the statehouse. It's the best way to discover the inner workings of the state government and to learn about this historic structure. Here are five things to know about doing a tour at the Colorado State Capitol Building.

TOURS ARE FREE
Public tours are offered free of charge hourly Monday through Friday 10am-3pm. The tours are limited to 30 people so you should arrive at least 20 minutes ahead of time, because tours do fill up.

GROUP TOURS
If you are coming in a group of 10 or more, advance reservations are required. Reservations can be made up to a year in advance, but tour availability is not guaranteed.

SELF-GUIDED TOURS
If you are unable to get in with a regular tour, you have the option to "self-guide" through the building. The downside to this option is that you would not be able to visit the dome, which is one of the coolest features of the capitol.

STUDENT GROUP TOURS
Student tours are extremely popular, especially during the legislative session. Student tours are scheduled separately from public tours and there is a lot of specific information available regarding the logistics of student tours.

NO HOLIDAY TOURS
The Colorado State Capitol Building is open Monday through Friday throughout the year 7:30am-5:00pm. However, the building is completely closed on weekends and most legal holidays.
