Sunday morning CNN broke the news of the guilty verdict in the Steubenville, Ohio rape case and they missed the point. 17-year-old Trent Mays and 16-year-old Ma’lik Richmond were found guilty of raping a 16-year-old female while she was unconscious at a party. Richmond could be released from a juvenile facility by the age of 21, while Mays could be locked up until age 24 and if you saw the report on CNN you would think these two guys are the victims.

CNN host Candy Crowley said that she “cannot imagine” how emotional the sentencing must have been for these two young men. Then CNN reporter Poppy Harlow noted it was “incredibly difficult” to see these star football players and very good students with such promising futures have their lives fall apart. Then Crowley asked CNN legal contributor Paul Callan; “What’s the lasting effect on these two young men being found guilty of rape?’ Callen noted that the most severe thing now was that under Ohio law they would be labeled as registered sex offenders “that will haunt them for the rest of their lives.”

What really surprised me was that these two educated women seemed so concerned about the out come for these rapists and not an ounce for the 16-year-old victim. CNN what about the ruin life of the young lady who has to live with this for the rest of her life? This is why so many young men think it’s okay to act like this.
