The Colorado Mesa University Mavericks have just completed their most dominating RMAC season ever going 35-3 in conference play and winning the regular season title. Now the teams that have been dominated all season by the Mavericks are in Grand Junction for the RMAC Tournament, playing for the right to advance to the NCAA Regional Tournament next week. (Due to the rainy weather, the start of the tournament has been postponed until Thursday. The start times of all the games will remain the same)

How dominant have the Mavericks been? The next best regular season records in the conference belong to CSU Pueblo, 24-14, New Mexico Highlands, 24-16, and Regis, 21-15. The other four teams in the conference were all under .500.

The Mavericks' three conference losses this season have come against Regis, CSU Pueblo, and tonight's opponent Colorado School of Mines. In fact, the Mavericks are coming off a four game sweep this past weekend against Mines, and have beaten the Orediggers seven out of 8 games this season. Mines's head coach says his team is motivated by that. "We feel like we owe them one."

The Mavericks appear to have a spot in the regional tournament locked up, as they are ranked second in the South Central Region. However, the only chance the other five teams have of making it to the Regional is to win this tournament. That means there will probably be an extremely intense feeling with each game that is played. It's a double elimination tournament -lose twice and you're out.

History doesn't seem to be on the Maverick's side. Six times in the last 8 years, the Mavericks won the RMAC regular season title, but only once have they managed to win the RMAC Tournament. Despite that result, the Mavericks went on to the regional tournament in seven of those seasons.

The Mavericks are ranked third in the national rankings-even getting one first place vote. In one Collegiate Baseball they are ranked second - their highest ranking ever. They are ranked second in the South Central Region, and have a record of 23-3 against the teams playing in the RMAC tournament.. But, now all of that doesn't matter. Records don't matter and past results don't matter. It comes down to which team can play the best baseball for one week.

The Mavericks will begin play Thursday at 7:00 against Colorado School of Mines at Suplizio Field. Thursday's other match ups will feature #2 CSU Pueblo and #5 Metro State at noon, and #3 New Mexico Highlands against #4 Regis at 3:30pm.
