A Ridgway man who lost control of his car and drove off of Red Mountain Pass landing over 300 feet off of the road survived the crash.

The Durango Herald reports the driver, 39-year-old Matthew Pratt, managed to extract himself from the mangled Mazda RX7 he was driving following the 370 foot tumble off of the embankment on Highway 550 Sunday (October 8).

The exact cause of the accident is still under investigation by the Colorado State Patrol. The owner of the towing company that retrieved the car says it was likely airborne before crashing onto rocks and rolling.

Pratt is reportedly in stable condition at St. Mary's Hospital after being airlifted from the crash site.
