Considering this is the last weekend prior to school starting Monday, here's a list of events going on this weekend that can be considered as one last summer fling:

FRIDAY, AUGUST 9

  • Enjoy one last summer fling as Lincoln Park Moyer Pool hosts a Back To School Party at the Pool, 12TH Street and North Avenue in Grand Junction. The event is open from 1:30 to 7:30 p.m. Youth admission is $2.50 and includes the waterslide. For more information, call 254-3866.
  • Tibetan Monks from the Gaden Shartse Monastery are visiting the Art Center throughout the weekend. The public is invited to the Art Center (1803 North 7TH Street in Grand Junction) and watch the Tibetan monks create a Manjushri Mandala. Call 243-7337 for specific times.
  • Glade Park Movie Under the Stars will feature the PG-13 movie “The Adventure of Tintin” at the Glade Park Fire Department, just west of the Glade Park Store. Concession stand opens at 5:30 p.m., grill opens at 6:00 p.m., live entertainment is from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m., and movie begins at dusk.
  • The Riverfront Concert Series will feature Asleep at the Wheel in concert at the James M. Robb Colorado Riverfront State Park (Highway 340 ½ mile south of I-70 in Fruita). Gates open at 6:00 p.m. Tickets are free with a $2.50 processing free, and are available at all City Market stores. For more information, call 683-4333.
  • Country star Phil Vassar will perform in concert at the Mesa Theater, 538 Main Street in Grand Junction. Doors open at 7:00 p.m. Admission is $30 at the door. For more information, call 241-1717.Grand Junction Rockies will play Idaho Fall Chukars at Suplizio Field. Game time is at 7:05 p.m. A fireworks display will follow Friday’s game.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 10

  • A Grand Junction Horse Show is scheduled for 8:00 a.m. at the Mesa County Fairgrounds, 2785 Highway 50 in Grand Junction. Event is free to the public.
  • Fruita Farmers Market from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the Civic Center lawn in Fruita. For more information, call 858-3894.
  • Blue Pig Gallery Studio in Palisade will host an Art Workshop (Collage) from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Blue Pig Gallery Studio, 101 West 3RD Street in Palisade. The class will work from a photo reference to experiment building up the planes and values of the face. For more information or to register, call 241-8561.
  • 9th Annual Colorado River Clean-up is set for 9:00 a.m. Organizers will provide trash bags, state park entry tags, T-shirts, and an appreciation barbecue. Participants are asked to bring gloves, a bucket for sharp items, wire cutters, raft/canoe/kayak and old tarp to protect your boat.   • Creative Avenues will present a Kidgets Back To School Event from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Claire’s Court in the Mesa Mall.   • Big Game Forever and the Colorado Mule Deer Association will host its annual banquet and live auction at Two Rivers Convention Center, 159 Main Street in Grand Junction.   • As part of the West Summer Concert Series, the Western Colorado Jazz Orchestra will perform in concert at 6:30 p.m. at Junction West RV Park, 793 22 Road in Grand Junction ( ½ mile from I-70 and Highway 6 & 50). The concert is considered family-friendly, and audience members are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs for seating. Tickets are $13.   • Grand Junction Rockies will play Idaho Fall Chukars at Suplizio Field. Game time is at 7:05 p.m.

  • Extreme Promotions is presenting a Super Cross Show at the Mesa County Fairgrounds Grandstands, 2785 U.S. Highway 50 in Grand Junction. Gates open at 4:30 p.m. and show begins at 6:00 p.m. Advance tickets are $14 for adults and $11 for kids ages 6 to 11 ($2 more at the gate). Children 5 and under are free.   • Rocky Mountain PBS is sponsoring Healthy Kids Fun Fest from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Lincoln Park, 12TH and North in Grand Junction. The event is geared towards ages preschool through sixth grade, and is considered educational, inspiring, engaging, and serious fun. SUNDAY, AUGUST 11

  • The Town of Palisade will present the Palisade Sunday Market from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in Downtown Palisade (3RD and Main in Palisade). The market features local artisans, musicians, non-profit organizations, wineries, and Palisade produce. For more information, call 464-5602.
