The Colorado Mesa Mavericks baseball team will start the season as the second ranked team behind St. Edwards in the South Central Region.

While snow is flying in the Grand Valley and across Colorado, the college baseball season gets underway next week when the Mavericks host the University of Nebraska-Kearney Lopers at Suplizio Field. While it's not unusual to be playing baseball in February, it is a bit odd to be playing in Grand Junction. Historically, the Mavs have played February games in more baseball-friendly weather locations like Arizona and California.

The Mavs begin the season ranked second in the South Central Region behind St. Edwards. One of the Mavericks goals this year will be to try and snag that #1 seed in the region, which would bring the regional tournament to Grand Junction. There were those, a season ago, who believed the Mavericks were deserving of the #1 seed in the South Central Region tournament, but the Mavs ended up as the #2 seed and had to travel to Texas for the NCAA tournament. The Mavs ended the season with an impressive 45-11 record, after going 1-2 in the regional.

Four CMU players were named to the Pre-season All-region First Team including Kevin Mitchell, Nate Robertson, a Montrose High School graduate, Garrett Carpenter, and Cody Lahman.

Three Mavericks also made it on to the Pre-season All-America roster with Robertson landing on the second team, with Mitchell and Carpenter on the third team.

The first annual Lead-Off Dinner is tonight (Jan.30) at the University Ballroom. You can get more details on the CMU website.
