However, as one might imagine, there are very specific and strict rules when it comes to purchasing a dangerous weapon at one of these shows.

What Exactly is a Gun Show in Colorado?

According to Colorado law, a gun show is any event in which 25 or more firearms are present for sale or exchange by three or more vendors.

However, the transfer of these firearms is regulated not just inside the venue, but also in the adjoining parking lot.

What Are the Rules Regarding Purchasing Firearms at a Colorado Gun Show?

First of all, the age limits set by Colorado law are enforced at a gun show in the same manner as a brick-and-mortar dealer - 21 years of age to purchase a handgun and 18 years old to purchase a long gun, commonly known as a rifle.

In addition, anyone seeking to purchase a firearm at one of these shows must show a valid I.D. and pass a criminal background check, known as Form 4473 from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, and must pay the fee for the background check up to $10.

Promoters of these events are also required to prominently display notices informing potential purchasers of the required background checks.

However, one exception to the law requiring a background check applies to antique firearms or relics; a provision that is enforced on the federal level.
