A wildfire erupted on Tuesday (June 15) in sage and oak brush in Moffat County.

According to the Moffat County Sheriff's Office Facebook page, several local agencies had responded to a wildfire in the area of Colorado Highway 13 and Moffat County Road 17 on Tuesday afternoon.

The fire had reportedly been putting off a large plume of smoke in the area.

As of Tuesday night, ground and air resources from the Bureau of Land Management, Craig Fire Protection District, and the Moffat County Sheriff's Office Wildland fire crew were actively fighting the fire, which was burning west of Moffat County Road 51 and south of Moffat County Road 32, as per information via the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office.

The Moffat County Sheriff’s office closed Moffat County Road 51 at around 8 p.m. Tuesday night as firefighters bravely continued to contain the wildfire.

As of Wednesday morning (June 16) the cause of the Collom Fire had yet to be determined, and a cause and origin investigation is ongoing, according to officials.

However, an update via the Moffat County Sheriff's Office Facebook page stated that fire behavior was active until late evening on Tuesday night, burning predominately on private lands.

The fire is estimated to have encompassed 400 acres.

Moffat County Road 51 remains closed to the public as of Wednesday.
