Interstate 70 in Colorado has been a mess all day and we're not out of the woods yet.

As of 2:22pm, westbound I-70 from the C-470 exit all the way to the tunnels was closed due to whiteout conditions and no estimated time for reopening. Eastbound I-70 traffic is stopped at Silverthorn. You can see from the video from Reed Timmer, I-70 has not been a pleasant place to be today. When the road has been open it's been slow going.

Today's closures on I-70 have been due, at times, to avalanche mitigation, and at other times because of dangerous conditions and safety concerns. A winter storm warning remains in effect through today for the corridor making travel "difficult to impossible", according to CDOT. Up to 11 inches is forecast for Vail Pass. At the tunnels, up to 7 inches is predicted for today, and another 2-4 inches tonight.

Meanwhile, it's going to be Saturday before conditions improve over Vail Pass with another 3-7 inches of snow expected tonight with areas of blowing snow. Saturday brings sunshine to the pass, but there's more snow in the forecast for Saturday night and Sunday.

CDOT warns there is potential for closures through the weekend, so motorists are advised to double-check on closures and alerts before traveling. Cotrip.org is a great resource for Colorado travelers to check on road conditions, weather advisories, closures, and alerts.
