Walton Goggins to Play Anarchist Leader in ‘The Maze Runner: The Death Cure’

After a bit of a rocky start involving an injury suffered by star Dylan O’Brien, The Maze Runner: The Death Cure, the third installment in the series based on the YA novels, is set to begin production in South Africa very soon. And a new character is joining the fray: Walton Goggins has boarded the film, so I guess that means we all have to watch it now.

Deadline reports that Goggins will play a character named Lawrence, who is described as as “unusual and dangerous character who is part-revolutionary, part-anarchist, and a voice for the voiceless people.” In the book, Lawrence is a member of the Right Arm, a group that uses the youngsters from the Maze to try to bring down WCKD, the organization that was founded to find a cure for the zombielike disease known as the Flare.

I haven’t read the books, so I can’t speak to Lawrence’s quality as a human, but it doesn’t sound like he’s a villain. It remains to be seen what they’ll do with him in the movie, though, since they probably wouldn‘t cast someone like him for a no-name part. Goggins will also be playing the villain in Alicia Vikander’s Tomb Raider reboot, so put that one on your calendars, Goggleheads.

The Maze Runner: The Death Cure is set to hit theaters January 12, 2018.
