In what could have been a very sad and tragic story, a dog that was swept away by a Colorado avalanche was dramatically rescued.

The incident happened on Colorado's Berthoud Pass when a dog, named Apollo, inadvertently triggered an avalanche. According to ABC 7, the dog was swept over a cliff and through a number of trees before being completely buried by the snow.

In a debris field that was about 300 feet long and 50 feet wide, it must have seemed unlikely the story would have a happy ending. Nearby skiers frantically searched for the dog using probe poles to poke through the snow trying to locate Apollo.

It Wasn't Looking Good For Apollo

For more than 20 minutes the skiers dug through the snow in hopes of reaching the dog before it was too late. It wasn't looking good. However, finally, the buried dog was detected and rescuers dug fervently to get Apollo out of the snow. Would it be too late?

"I found him, I found him, I found him," can be heard on the video when the dog was finally located. The guys worked quickly to carefully dig through the snow, and with much relief, uncovered the dog who was alive and well.

After emerging from the snow, Apollo seemed to be fine as he wandered around, perhaps wondering what the excitement was all about. The dog's owner called the skiers "heroes' and said the dog was fine except for an injured leg.It was a happy ending for Apollo and his owner.
