State of Colorado Decides to Elect President by Popular Vote

Many people especially lately are trying to replace the Electoral College and that includes lots of people here in Colorado. Actually, according to NBC News just yesterday Colorado has now become the latest state to join the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact.

Basically, the Colorado voters have decided that they want to do away with the Electoral College and would rather decide the President of the United States-based by popular vote. There have already been 15 states and Washington D.C. who have approved this new way of voting. Of these 15 states that would cover 196 electoral votes of the 270 required to win the election.

All states that have approved legislation to join the compact agreed that it would not take effect until the 270-mark has been reached. Once that is accomplished the state would use their electoral college votes to elect a winner, all based on the popular vote. So the old system would be used to create this new system.

This idea was first introduced in 2006 but the legislation failed multiple times. Last year it was signed into law by Governor Jared Polis but was then successfully challenged by Colorado voters.

Critics of this voting change say that it will encourage candidates to work mostly with larger cities that tend to lean more Democratic. Although there are some Republicans that support this change as well.
