Karma? Some Rams Fans Think Stadium Is To Blame For Losing Streak
As the Colorado State University football program concluded their 2021 season with a sixth consecutive loss to drop their overall record to 3-9 on the year, fans debated whether or not the team was cursed by karma after building the new Sonny Lubick Field at Canvas Stadium on campus.
Many of these sentiments came from people who were opposed to abandoning picturesque Hughes Stadium on the west edge of town for the state of the art on-campus facility. Prior to the stadium being built, polling on the issue indicated as many as 60% of those polled were against building a new stadium in the first place.
Following the loss, some disappointed fans were particularly ruthless on social media with comments like, "Your $220m stadium has brought you one thing: failure. Call it karma."
Is there a Canvas Stadium curse?
True enough, the Rams have struggled as a program since the new facility opened in 2017. After a promising 7-6 inaugural season in the stadium, they posted a 3-9 record in 2018, a 4-8 record in 2019 and a 1-3 overall record for the COVID-shortened 2020 season.
The end result of the 2021 season was the final straw for some Rams fans, and ultimately was the end of the Steve Addazio era at CSU, as the head coach was terminated days after a blowout loss to the University of Nevada to conclude the season.
But there is hope for a bright chapter in the still shiny Canvas Stadium to begin. Enter new Rams Head Coach Jay Norvell, inbound from the very team that beat CSU to end their season and sent Addazio packing: the University of Nevada. By simply accepting the job, Norvell has energized a fan base who has been vocal about the team's woes the last few years.
If sports curses are a real thing - and I'm not saying Sonny Lubick Field at Canvas Stadium is cursed - the good news is that all curses can be and ultimately are broken. The Boston Red Sox eventually broke the Curse of the Bambino. The Chicago Cubs found a way to shatter the Curse of the Billy Goat. Those curses lasted eighty six and seventy one years respectively.
Here's hoping Coach Norvell can help end this one a little faster than those, and my money is on just that. The future is bright in Fort Collins.
