The Trump administration has put forth a proposal to close a loophole in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

The Denver Channel estimates it could impact more than 30,000 Coloradans.

The argument for the cuts is that it would allegedly fix a loophole that gives benefits to people who don't need the assistance. In the press release from USDA.GOV, an example is cited of a millionaire who lives in Minnesota that successfully enrolled in the SNAP program to show that the program is a waste of taxpayer dollars.

The Trump administration claims this will save the USDA billions of dollars. They also say this will get the proper benefits to the families that really need it.

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue:

“For too long, this loophole has been used to effectively bypass important eligibility guidelines. Too often, states have misused this flexibility without restraint. The American people expect their government to be fair, efficient, and to have integrity – just as they do in their own homes, businesses, and communities. That is why we are changing the rules, preventing abuse of a critical safety net system, so those who need food assistance the most are the only ones who receive it.”
