Report: My Chemical Romance’s Gerard Way to Score Kevin Smith’s ‘Clerks 3′
My Chemical Romance frontman and comic book creator Gerard Way is reportedly set to compose the score for Clerks 3, the upcoming flick from filmmaker Kevin Smith.
That's according to a statement Smith apparently gave at a recent roadshow event promoting his current movie, the Jay And Silent Bob Reboot, itself another piece of the puzzle in the auteur's Clerks universe that follows the original Clerks (1994), Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001) and Clerks II (2006). While Smith began writing a script for Clerks 3 over seven years ago, it was presumed to be on hold indefinitely before the director revealed earlier this month that a "completely new screenplay" had revived the project.
But where does the onetime My Chemical Romance bandleader fit into the Smith's fictional View Askewniverse? As circulated Wednesday (Oct. 23) by Slash Film, a reader by the name of Mario R. heard Smith say Way is coming onboard the Clerks franchise to score the forthcoming third film.
If true, this would would essentially mean Smith has convinced Way to commit to a long-term musical project that extends beyond the handful of loosely released singles from the singer in recent years. Since the dissolution of My Chemical Romance in 2013, Way's been focused on other artistic pursuits, such as the Netflix series counterpart to his The Umbrella Academy comic.
Among Way's one-off solo songs is a previous collaboration with Smith on a track for 2014's Tusk, so there is an established connection between the two. But this would be Way's first full film score and just a few weeks ago, Smith revealed to the public that Clerks 3 was back on track.
"It'll be a movie that concludes a saga," Smith shared on Instagram Oct. 1 with a photo alongside original Clerks stars Jason Mewes and Jeff Anderson. "It'll be a movie about how you're never too old to completely change your life. It'll be a movie about how a decades-spanning friendship finally confronts the future. It'll be a movie that brings us back to the beginning — a return to the cradle of civilization in the great state of [New Jersey]."
This Week, My Chemical Romance's The Black Parade celebrated its 13th anniversary. Earlier this month, wrestler and Fozzy rocker Chris Jericho revealed his own connection to Smith's View Askew films and shortly before that, Mewes played "Wikipedia: Fact or Fiction?" with Loudwire.
