Metallica, Ozzy Osbourne, Muse + More Put ‘Global’ in 2020 Global Citizen Festival
The Global Citizen Festival is living up to its name, expanding in a major way for 2020 with the announcement of the Global Goal Live: The Possible Dream worldwide concert event. Helping them do that will be such acts as Metallica, Ozzy Osbourne, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Eddie Vedder, Muse, Queen and more.
The event will take place over ten hours on five continents, serving as the culmination of the Global Goal Live: The Possible Dream year-long campaign.
“Our goal, to put it simply, is to engage every single person on the planet in this mission [to end global poverty],” Global Citizen CEO Hugh Evans said in a statement. “To do so we must boldly and creatively reach global citizens where they are: in person, on television, on their phones and online.”
The Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) has estimated that the world’s poorest 59 countries need at least $350 billion more per year to achieve the Global Goals, according to Global Citizen.
"The end of poverty is in sight," reads a statement on the Global Citizen website. "If an additional $350 billion is secured each year for the world’s poorest countries. But to do that, we need governments, corporations, philanthropists, and, most importantly, you, to take action now for people and for the planet. So we can achieve the possible dream."
Among the other acts expected to participate in the Global music event are Alicia Keys, Billie Eilish, Coldplay, Cyndi Lauper, H.E.R., Janelle Monáe, Lizzo, Miley Cyrus, Ozuna, Pharrell Williams, Shawn Mendes and Usher among others.
The U.S. portion of the event will feature Queen with Adam Lambert, Pharrell Williams and Alicia Keys, and special guest performances from French Montana, Ben Platt and Jon Batiste & Stay Human all taking place at New York's Central Park on Sept. 28, 2020.
“Like Live Aid in 1985, we believe this concert will be a milestone,” Queen’s Brian May said in a statement. “It will generate practical solutions to address the world’s glaring anomalies. Global Citizen is an organization which has already moved mountains. We hope this concert will be the beginning of a new era in which all creatures on Earth will eventually benefit.”
Pointing to Live Aid and Live 8 as inspirations for this kind of event, organizers are billing this as this generation's music event to impact a major global change. Check out the trailer for the concert and campaign below and for more info on Global Citizen's efforts, check here.
