While Colorado has many different great options when it comes to higher education, Colorado School of Mines stands out as the best, being the only one ranked in U.S. News’ Top 100.

In general as well, Coloradans tend to seek degrees. We have the second highest percentage of people with a bachelor’s degree and the highest percentage of people with at least an associates degree.

With this being said though, student safety while they are attending college is by far one of the most important things people look for.

As a result, it is worth taking a look to see what is considered to be the most dangerous campus in Colorado.

Colorado State University Listed as Most Dangerous Campus in Colorado

The website degreechoices.com set out to look for the most dangerous college campuses for 2024.

To do so, they looked across the country to see how many violent crimes were reported on campus in 2022.

Each university in the country has to report how many violent crimes happen on their campus each year, and degreechoices.com says that some schools could be underreporting their crime statistics.

In their list of the 45 most dangerous college campuses in 2024, Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado came in at 36th with 32 violent crimes in 2022.

It is also the only Colorado school to be on the list.

However, there is a caveat to this. In the list, they did not account for the size of the colleges. They accounted for that in the second list, which looked at the number of violent crimes on campus per 100,000. As it would turn out, Colorado State does not appear on this list.

A Different Colorado College Has a Higher Crime Rate

In terms of volume of violent crime, Colorado State has the most. However, when it comes to crime rate per 1,000 students, safehome.org has a different Colorado school on the list.

As it would turn out, the University of Colorado Denver’s Anschutz Medical Campus has the highest crime rate of any campus in the state, with 11 crimes per 1,000 students.

They also note that of all the schools that they have on the list, the Anschutz Medical Campus is different in that it has no dorms or housing.

It is also fair to acknowledge that safehome.org conducted their study a bit differently, including more crimes in their research. With the different criteria, the Anschutz Medical Campus had 260 crimes in a year.

According to an official of University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, this data also lacks some context as well.

They say the data from this study is from 2022, a year where car theft, which needs to be reported as a violent crime, was at an all-time high in Denver.

The official noted that of the 198 they reported themselves that year, 169 of them were from vehicle thefts. We have been told that number has gone down significantly in 2023, but they will not be released that information until October.

However, they also said in January of this year, there was no vehicle thefts at all.

However, one more Colorado college makes this list as well, with Community College of Denver ranking one spot lower. It had 73 crimes reported in a year, meaning it has a crime rate of 10 per 1,000 students.

With the data from Anschutz Medical Campus surrounding 2022's record number of vehicle thefts, assumptions could be made that the Community College of Denver could fall into the same boat.
