Time Is Running Out for Your Regular Colorado Driver’s License
The countdown to Real ID is on in Colorado. A little more than one year from now, residents of Colorado will no longer be able to use a state-issued driver's license to board a plane.

The 2005 Real ID Act
The Real ID Act of 2005 was recommended by the 9-1-1 Commission and passed by Congress. The goal was to increase security standards to prevent terrorists from obtaining travel documents. Once we reach the deadline on May 7th, 2025, Transportation Security Checkpoints will no longer accept state IDs that do not meet Real ID requirements.
Do I Need A Colorado Real ID?
Colorado is home to over 4.4 million people with a driver's license. The state has been Real ID compliant since 2012, so if you have updated your license since then, you may already have the Real ID star on the corner of your Colorado license. If you don't see the star, you will need to update your license to be able to board a plane.

Once we reach the deadline, a driver's license that does not meet the new security standards will not have a star and instead read "Federal Limits Apply". You can still use a regular license for driving, age-restricted purchases, or entering a bar or nightclub. The full list of documents accepted by the TSA beginning in May 2025 can be found here.
