Did you know Western Colorado orchards start the U-Pick season around Labor Day Weekend? This means the heart of the apple harvest is ready by mid-September to October. Locals know our warm days and cool nights make fruit grown in the Grand Valley extra sweet and crisp. Pick early to avoid crowds and that afternoon sun. It’s a good idea to call ahead to the orchard of your choice if your heart is set on a particular type of apple (Honeycrisp, Fuji, Gala, or heirlooms).

A Few Tips To Remember

All of Western Colorado’s orchards are unique in their own way. Some are more like rustic farm stands, and others are full-service family fun. Playgrounds, hay bales, and the chance to picnic are pretty common, while others offer cider and local wine tastings. Remember, it’s ok to sample. Most U-pick farms will let you sample before filling a basket.

Before you go, bring sunscreen, good shoes, and make some space in the trunk for all those apples you’ll be bringing home.
