During the earliest days of Grand Junction, the settlement was a part of Gunnison County. Colorado took a big step forward in 1883 when Mesa, Delta, and Montrose counties were all carved out of Gunnison County to establish the Western Slope.

Just like every hometown, Grand Junction has its own slang, references, and ways of talking. Just as "it's over the hill" is a geographic reference to the Continental Divide, the phrase ‘west slope, best slope’ is a proud local motto—especially in comparison to Denver or Boulder. “Keep your city traffic. West Slope, Best Slope!”

When someone says “Out Fruita way”, they mean in the general vicinity of the town of Fruita. “I work out Fruita way, near the bike trails.”
“Up on the Mesa” refers to most locations on Colorado's Grand Mesa. “Let’s head up on the Mesa for the weekend.”
“It’s a four-season day” is a reference to Grand Junction's weather forecast. Days that start sunny, turn windy, include a hailstorm, then get sunny and hot again by late afternoon are four-season days.
