February 2026 marks the beginning of phase 7 of the I-70 Business Improvements in downtown Grand Junction. This phase will focus on a full roadway reconstruction from Third Street to Sixth Street on both Pitkin and Ute Avenues. CDOT says this will include pavement replacement, drainage upgrades, sidewalk improvements, and traffic signal work. Both Pitkin and Ute are key downtown connections, so drivers will need to stay alert when approaching roadwork as phased land shifts will keep drivers on their toes.

Travel Impacts: Delays, Width Limits, and Detours

During workday hours, drivers will likely find traffic between Third and Sixth Streets down to one lane. Expect reduced speeds and occasional detours through the construction zone. CDOT recommends allowing an extra 10 minutes for your commute if you travel through this area once the heavy work begins. Oversized vehicles, note that this area will enforce a 10-foot width restriction in active work areas, and that streetside parking may be impacted near Fourth & Fifth Streets. Pedestrians and cyclists should watch for detour signs when sidewalk replacement begins.

According to CDOT, access to downtown businesses will remain open throughout the construction (ongoing until 2027), though routes may shift.
