Grand Junction, Colorado Astronomer and Author Shares Some Insight
Recently, local author and space enthusiast Jeff Dershem stopped by for another podcast episode to share his insights. Jeff, a 1989 graduate of Grand Junction High School, is the author of Planets to Pulsars: A Citizen’s Guide to the Universe, and he knows his way around the cosmos.
In our latest conversation, he highlighted some of the must-see astronomical events of 2025 and the best places in Western Colorado to view them.
What to Watch For in 2025
Lunar Eclipses – While 2025 won’t bring us a total solar eclipse, we will get a couple of lunar eclipses visible from Colorado. These are always a spectacular sight, especially in the clear, dark skies of the Western Slope.
Meteor Showers – The Perseids and Geminids will once again dazzle, and with minimal light pollution in areas like the Grand Mesa or the Colorado National Monument, you'll have a front-row seat.
Planetary Alignments – Keep an eye out for some stunning planetary conjunctions, where planets appear to be close together in the sky, visible with the naked eye.
Aurora Borealis? – While not common this far south, solar activity is increasing, making it possible to catch a glimpse of the northern lights on the horizon during strong geomagnetic storms.
Best Places to Watch From In Western Colorado
Jeff shared some of the top spots in Western Colorado for stargazing. The Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, a designated International Dark Sky Park, offers some of the best conditions for viewing. The Grand Mesa and Rabbit Valley also provide great vantage points with minimal light pollution.
So, as 2025 rolls around, make a point to step outside, look up, and take in the wonders of the universe. And if you want to hear more expert insight, be sure to give our latest podcast with Jeff Dershem a listen.
