Watch Out For This Email Scam Going Around Colorado

Most days as of late, between the spam calls, texts with fake warning links, emails, etc. it feels like the entire world is trying to scam you. These texts and emails typically give you a reason to click on a link to take you either to a place to pay a fine that doesn't actually exist, see an order you didn't place, claim a prize you didn't win, etc. The reason for these links is either to try and get you to use your log-in so that they can steal it from you and access your personal information, or plant a virus in your system.

This particular email had a 3-minute countdown that started the second I opened it and continued even as I closed out of it and re-opened it. That right there is enough to scare the untrained scam detectives so let's get you up to speed so you don't make these mistakes.

Here's the email I received on my work Townsquare email this morning...

<<Cancel Deletion of My Account>> (fake link)

If you do not log into your account in the next 3 minutes you account will be permanently deleted.

First of all, if you really want to delete my work email, by all means. I wouldn't shed a tear. Second, I altered the email they sent it to, but it used an email address that is different from the one they actually emailed me on. Below is a screenshot of the actual email, you can see the countdown at the bottom. It would freak some people out I'm sure...

The countdown expired and guess what... I'm still sadly getting work emails.

Top Ways To Avoid Being Scammed To Share With Loved Ones

The Federal Trade Commission has some great advice on avoiding scams on the phone and through emails and texts here. If it seems fishy, it probably is, so take the time to investigate. Never act on anyone or anything trying to collect a fine without looking into it further. These criminals sadly target young and older people, so make sure you share this important information with those around you to protect them and yourselves. Maybe someday we get this under control, until then, always ask questions, be over-cautious, and never be pressured into giving away your personal information.
