Canadian Town Becomes Patience, Colorado for 'Resident Alien'

If you haven't had someone recommend "Resident Alien" on SyFy or Netflix to you yet, don't be surprised when it happens. I'd heard of the show, but not gotten around to checking it out, until a friend raved about it. It is really good;  a comedy-drama about an alien crashing in Colorado and then becoming a resident.

'Resident Alien' began in 2021, and has been a smash ever since; getting 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, and having nearly one million people watch it each week. I can now say that I'm proud to be one of the folks that enjoy it.

'Resident Alien' is Filmed in Ladysmith, British Columbia

If you've seen "Resident Alien" you can agree that the producers want us to think of it as being similar to Telluride: A small and pretty mountain town. It turns out, a small and pretty Canadian coastal town is where they film the show.

I was watching one of the first few episodes, and saw a business' name: Ladysmith Trading Company. I realized that must be the real town that "Resident Alien" is filmed in, and I was correct. Ladysmith, British Columbia.

As of 2025, Ladysmith has a population of about 9,000 originally founded in 1898 by the son of coal mine baron. The town was created to be housing for coal miners of the time, and was officially founded in 1904. Today, the town's main economy revolves around tourism, forestry, and agriculture.

The town has had a few other project film in their town including "Sonic the Hedgehog" and 2014's "Godzilla."
