Unique Race Event Makes First Appearance in Colorado in Fort Collins
Colorado is known for having some fun race events; whether it's the Bolder Boulder or the Denver Hot Chocolate Run, Coloradans love to get out for an adventure. For the first time, a race event that began in Sweden in 2006 hits Colorado in October of 2025.
There aren't many people who've lived in Colorado for a long period of time that haven't participated in a least a 5K. Getting up early in the crisp Colorado air, to meetup with friends for 3.2 miles of fun. There are also many Coloradans that really like to push themselves when it comes to competing. I have a friend that has participated in ultra-marathons, for example.

This race, the Ötillö ('Island to Island' in Swedish), new to Colorado, is about swimming and running. If it had cycling, you might consider it a triathlon. According to the Colorado Sun, on October 5, 2025, there will be upwards of 200 competitors racing in three courses: 6 miles, 11 miles, 23 miles. They'll start at Lory State Park, run to and swim in Horsetooth, then run back to Lory State Park.
What Items Are Required for the SwimRun Race in Fort Collins?
- Wetsuit - Horsetooth will be about 13-15° C.
- Whistle.
- Handpaddles/fins (suggested.)
- Registration Fee ($100 as of September 1.)
I once competed in the annual Horsetooth Half (marathon) and it was no picnic; I can't imagine adding swimming into the mix. There are plenty of people, however, that get a thrill out of the idea of running, then swimming, then running some more.
