Colorado is home to some amazing wildlife. Many people pay good money each year to drive through some of the national parks in the area, to hike and to camp, in hopes of seeing some of these animals in their natural habitat. Unfortunately, some people feel the need to get close to the animals to get pictures, videos, or because they think it is safe to approach them. While it is always exciting to see some of the majestic creatures, there are some you hope to never get too close to. Here are the top 5 scariest animals to encounter and meet in the wild when hiking, camping, or exploring Colorado.

#5 Black Bear

Bears are among the cutest animals on the planet, but if you run into a bear in the wild, your life is in danger. They might be cute to look at, but they are vicious and capable of mauling you to death. If you see a cub, you are in even more danger. Most may think bears should rank higher on this list, and if grizzlies lived in Colorado, they would. Black bears are typically more skittish and likely to run away from you if scared, but that doesn't mean they aren't scary to run into when in the wild.

#4 Ticks

You don't have to be big to be scary. Ticks are among the scariest creatures to encounter anywhere, as they carry many diseases and at times it can take hours, days, or even weeks to realize one is attached to you. The good news is that you are unlikely to get Lyme disease from ticks in Colorado, but Rocky Mountain Fever is a high possibility.

#3 Moose

Moose are ranked the most dangerous animal in Colorado, but that doesn't mean they are the scariest to encounter. If you give them space, respect them, and don't scare them, they likely will leave you alone. If you get too close or threaten one, your life will be in danger, as they are highly aggressive animals and can charge and stomp you to death. They are incredible to see in the wild, and something everyone should experience, but make sure not to get too close.

#2 Rattlesnakes

Rattlesnakes are among the scariest animals to see in the wild anywhere, especially in Colorado. With the dry, warm weather in 2026, they have been out much more than normal, and often they are hiding nearby without you knowing. When hiking, make sure to keep an eye on the ground and to be careful where you step and avoid flipping rocks. The scariest thing about these animals is how fast they can strike, how quickly their venom takes effect, and that they can be hiding within feet of you at any time.

#1 Mountain Lion

The scariest animal to encounter in the wild in Colorado has to be the mountain lion. Similar to the rattlesnake, they can be nearby, watching you, without you knowing. They blend in easily with their surroundings; unlike the rattlesnake, they move much quicker, will hunt you, and are relentless. Their sharp teeth and razor-like claws could be your end if you encounter one in the wild. They are much faster than a rattlesnake and will continue to pursue you and you are unlikely to outrun one.
