Denver Zoo goers are all safe after a strange incident involving multiple primates last week.

On Wednesday, May 30th four orangutans escaped from their enclosure at the Denver Zoo. They somehow escaped into an employees only service hallway at the Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance, according to reports.

Possible Door Malfunction to Blame

Workers became aware that there had been a breach at approximately 3:45 PM. There's no word on just how long the apes were outside of their exhibit before staff found out about this escape.

Zoo Initiates 'Code Red' Protocol

The incident triggered something called a "Code Red" according to the Instagram account ImFromDenver.

No Contact With Public, No Injuries Reported

A spokesperson for the zoo confirmed that a malfunctioning door could have been what allowed the one male and three females to make a run for it.

Orangutans Were Safely Recovered

Luckily, the escapees did not come into contact with any human zoo guests during their brief getaway.

The four orangutans were safely tranquilized and transported back into their zoo habitat. Everyone seems to be safe and sound.

Denver Zoo Responds to Security Breach

"These events are very rare, but our animal care teams are prepared for any potential scenario. We handled it very smoothly,” said zoo spokesperson Jake Kubie.

Officials are still investigating what exactly caused this door to malfunction.
