There's Nothing Like Baseball in Colorado Summer

There's nothing like some major league baseball to help get you in the mood for summer.

Over Memorial Day Weekend, I went to my very first Colorado Rockies game. The team had been struggling throughout the past few weeks. At this point in the season, they are considered "the worst team in modern Major League Baseball history," according to NPR.

However, on Friday, May 23rd things took a turn for the better. The Rockies took on the New York Yankees in game one of three for the series and actually came out on top (2-3).

The following two contests saw the Bronx Bombers come back in full force to beat Colorado's MLB team.

My First Time at Coors Field in Denver

I actually went out to Denver for the Saturday matchup.

While I live here in Northern Colorado, I'm a Yankees fan at my core. My dad actually grew up right by the old Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, and would sneak in to the facility to run the bases.

Pretty cool, right?

I had such a blast cheering on my team while checking out Coors Field. Everything was fine for the majority of the game. Aaron Judge had just hit a home run in the first inning, the Yankees were leading by the fifth, and my friend and I had great seats.

Foul Ball Drama on the Third Base Line

We were right along the third base line. When I figured out where we'd be seated, I tried to piece together how likely it was for me to catch a foul ball. I know...I'm a child.

I thought we were in the prime foul ball catching spot.

So, as the game went on, a handful of people in our section ended up snagging them, one by one. I'd playfully whine to my friend about how I was SOOOO CLOOOOSE to getting it that time.

The Awkward Moment: Who Deserves the Ball?

By the time I was halfway through my beer, one of the Rockies had tossed a game ball in my general direction. Unfortunately, it was just a tad too far out of my reach. The guy in the row below mine ended up catching it.

His face exploded into a grin as he ran his fingers across the red stitches. Less than a second after he triumphantly lifted his prize up for his friend to see, a girl appeared at his side.

I noticed she was in the next row or two over from the man. She didn’t seem to say anything to him. Maybe I was reading too much into it, but as soon as the ball changed hands, she scurried off to a completely different section—no 'please,' no 'thank you'!

Did she even know this guy?

He didn't even WANT to give up the ball!

Why is it that, as soon as a kid begs for something in a public situation like that; adults are pressured to give in?

If I was put in that exact situation, I don't know if I would hand it over. Some kids are so entitled.

I brought this up to some co-workers and they actually fell on the other side of the spectrum.

What would you do with a game baseball, Kerri?

Why does this matter to you so much?

You don't NEED that!

Maybe I am a full-grown adult who pays taxes and has health insurance, but if I really wanted to keep the ball I should be able to.

Wait...is this is a hill I'll die on?!?

If you do end up catching a ball from a MLB game, you should have the opportunity to choose if you'd like to keep it, and not be pressured by a whiny kid.

At the end of the day though, I know I would cave and just hand the ball off to a kid.

At the age of 27, what would I really do with this memento? It will mean a lot more to this tiny baseball fan than it would to me. However, the child or pre-teen better say please and thank you when that happens.

Manners matter to me.

What do you think? If you were in a situation like this, would you just hand the ball over or would you keep it for yourself?
