Are you a weather watcher? How would you like to have your reports utilized and shared publicly by the National Weather Service? Here's your chance to be a SKYWARN weather spotter for Grand Junction.

My mother lives for this stuff. She sits on the front porch with binoculars watching for every little change in the weather. Are you familiar with those people who follow tornado watchers as they broadcast their pursuits live via the Internet? That's her.

Well, if you are of the same cloth, perhaps you should consider being a SKYWARN weather spotter.

The National Weather Service seeks volunteers to provide reliable weather reports. According to their site, ground truth is crucial for use in issuing warnings and forecasts.

A free training class is coming to Grand Junction on June 24. You'll learn about weather safety and the procedures for identifying and reporting severe weather.

Two sessions will be held in Grand Junction on June 24:

  • Basic - 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
  • Advanced - 11 a.m. to noon

To participate you must RSVP. Call the National Weather Service at 970-243-7007, or email Matt Aleksa at matthew.aleksa@noaa.gov.

You would be great at this! Granted, this isn't central Kansas where a tornado can fall out of the sky at the drop of a hat. Grand Junction's weather tends to be fairly mild. Then again, when we get a cloud burst over the Monument, the public's safety is in jeopardy. Be a part of the action!
