The next time you find yourself driving down Horizon Drive in Grand Junction, keep a sharp eye out for three new crosswalks.

According to the Horizon Drive District newsletter, a 300-foot section of Horizon Drive north of G Road has been the site of three pedestrian fatalities between the years 2010 and 2015. All fatalities took place between 8 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.

The Horizon Drive District approached the Grand Junction City Council with a plan involving the construction of three crosswalks. These features include flashing yellow lights and a small center island for pedestrians.

As you can see in the photo at top, this crosswalk near Enzo's is similar to those seen on 12th Street near Lincoln Park and Colorado Mesa University.

I can only speak for myself, but it seems like the similar crosswalk on 12th near Lincoln Park always manages to sneak up on me. I drive 12th all the time and am fully aware of the crosswalk. From time to time, though, I'm still caught off guard when the flashing yellow strobe lights kick on. Fortunately, those lights are hard to miss.

Please keep a sharp eye out for pedestrians utilizing these new crosswalks on Horizon Drive. Hopefully, the new additions will make Horizon safer for pedestrians and motorists alike.
