Grand Junction Kidnapping Suspect Arrested in Kansas
A registered sex offender who is suspected of kidnapping of a 15-year-old boy in Grand Junction has been arrested in Kansas.
On Thursday, September 13 at 5:20 p.m. the Grand Junction Police Department received a report of a runaway from the mother of a 15-year-old boy who discovered the teen and his belongings were missing from the hotel they were staying at when she arrived home from work.
When asked, other occupants of the hotel said the teen was leaving the hotel to travel to the front range to see family and that he had left the hotel with another resident. That resident was identified as 27-year-old Samuel Jumps who had a felony warrant for a sex offender registration violation in Arapahoe County.
A Grand Junction Police Detective tried but was unable to reach the 15-year-old boy on his cell phone. The police department also posted the boy on a national database of missing and endangered children.
Detectives investigating the case determined Jumps was driving a red Mercury Mountaineer and was believed to be traveling to South Carolina. They were also able to get Jump's cell phone number and when a detective talked to him, Jumps said he was driving through Kansas and did not know where the boy was.
While law enforcement determined Jumps location, a Grand Junction Police Detective managed to contact the boy on his cell phone and determined he was in Ellis, Kansas. Local authorities picked up the boy who was unharmed.
Kanas law enforcement notified of Jumps general location, found and arrested Jumps in Hays, Kansas. Jumps is currently being held on a Grand Junction Police Department felony warrant for Kidnapping and a misdemeanor charge of False Reporting to Authorities.
