When it boils down to it, a good song, for the most part, is a good song. The songs we grow up loving are special to us for a number of reasons, but at the core of the songs are things like melody, lyrics, harmonies, etc.

That being said, artists will often cover an already popular song and make it their own while leaving the core melody intact, essentially creating a whole new piece of music.

There can be multiple outcomes to an artist covering a popular song. Sometimes we fall back in love with the song, sometimes we gain a whole new appreciation for the song, and sometimes the cover is so good that we forget about the original version altogether.

Curious, I posted a question on Facebook asking which cover versions you not only like, but prefer over the originals, and here's what you said.

Grand Junction Prefers These Cover Versions over the Originals

Numerous great cover versions of popular songs were mentioned in response to my question, but a few were shared by multiple people.

The most popular cover song mentioned was Disturbed's 'The Sound of Silence.' David Draiman and co. took the classic Simon and Garfunkle song and added a cold, dark, haunting tone to it, giving it a whole new life decades after the original was released.

Another popular song mentioned was Johnny Cash's 'Hurt.' This song was originally written by Trent Reznor for his band Nine Inch Nails and released on the band's 'The Downward Spiral' album in 1994. However, the man in black teamed up with producer Rick Rubin to breathe new life into a song and has become a huge part of the late country singer's legacy.

Take a look at some of the cover versions that Grand Junction residents prefer over the originals:
