Grand Junction Christmas Lights From the Good Ol’ Days

Christmas lights and decorations have come a long way in the last 70 years. Then again, there's something to be said for the creativity and ingenuity displayed by Grand Junction residents of the 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's. Take a look at Grand Junction Christmas lights and decorations of yesteryear via the lens of photographer Robert Grant.

In many ways, the downtown lights have hardly changed a bit. Take a good look at the opening and closing shots in the video above. It's as if time stood still.

You'll notice a shortage of mechanized Santa figures making robotic movements. Yes, the decorations are a bit cruder in some of the shots above. At the same time, though, they are just as effective, if not more so.

How about those store displays? Some Grand Junction downtown merchants went all out, didn't they?

There is only slightly out of place photo in the video. It's a Bob Grant photo showing a 17-year-old me taking photos of Christmas lights. That photo is from 1987.

The annual Downtown Parade of Lights is coming up this Saturday at 5 p.m. on Main Street. Watch the video above, and then catch the parade this weekend. Compare and contrast this year's decorations to that in the video. You might find things haven't changed that much.
