According to the Colorado Department of Revenue, certain types of gambling are legal here in the state, but before you get too excited make sure you're aware of which ones are and which ones are not.
What Types of Gambling Are Legal in Colorado?
There are a few different types of gambling that are legal in the state of Colorado:
- limited gaming at Colorado casinos
- the Colorado lottery
- Colorado Division of Racing - live and off-track betting on horse racing events
- Secretary of State's Office - licensing & Regulations for bingo, raffles, and charitable games.
- "Social" Gambling - must have a bona fide social relationship and no profit motive
What Colorado Cities Allow Casinos?
There are 3 Colorado cities where casino gambling is allowed. The three cities are:
- Black Hawk, Colorado
- Central City, Colorado
- Cripple Creek, Colorado
“The Gaming Commission places strict controls on Colorado casinos. We have worked hard to maintain a well-regulated industry with an emphasis on casino patron protection,” said Commission Chairman Natalie Meyer.
In addition, the unincorporated community of Towaoc, which operates under tribal sovereignty, also allows casino gambling.
Is Internet Gambling Legal in Colorado?
Contrary to popular belief, it is actually illegal to gamble online in the state of Colorado.
“Not only is internet gambling illegal, it is risky,” said Attorney General Suthers. “The player has no idea if the games are being conducted fairly or whether they will even be paid. Plus there are no regulatory controls prohibiting children from accessing the sites and playing.”
While some sites may advertise their legality, it is only in the state where they are based. It is illegal to place gambling bets online from Colorado.
