For those who may be seeking a fall adventure, a ride on the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad might just be the ticket.

Colorado's most famous train is the Durango Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, but it is not the state's only scenic train ride.

The Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad may not be as well known, but remains a popular destination in southern Colorado and northern New Mexico. It leaves on daily excursions from Antonito, Colorado and also from Chama, New Mexico.

The railroad was built in 1880, an extension of the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad, which filed for abandonment in 1969. The states of Colorado and New Mexico saved the most scenic part of the route along with its equipment and buildings

Now, the train takes passengers on a scenic trip through the San Juan Mountains and the Conejos Valley. Half-day and full-day rides are offered, and an all-you-can-eat  lunch is included in the ticket price -which ranges from $95 to $195.

The season runs from the end of May to about the third week of October, which means this season is ending soon.
