Enjoying a Charm of Colorado Hummingbirds

Seeing hummingbirds in Colorado certainly is not rare, but seeing a charm of these tiny fliers is not extremely common.

In case you didn't know, a group of hummingbirds is called a charm. There are 11 varieties of hummingbirds in Colorado, but trying to identify them can be quite a challenge, considering how quickly they move about.

Perky Pet says hummingbirds can fly between 25 and 30 miles an hour. They also dive up to 50 times per minute. In lieu of attempting to identify these fluttering birds, I'm just going to enjoying watching them.

Watching a hummingbird or two enjoy a little refreshment is pretty interesting, but watching a big charm of them taking turns at the feeder is fascinating. I captured these hummingbirds on video during a recent excursion near the Flattops in Garfield County.

I hope you enjoy this brief video as much as I enjoyed watching them up close and personal. What is really cool is in the last part of the video when I slow it down and you can see how these little birds appear to fly backward, sideways, and just hang in mid-air waiting their turn at the feeder.
