This past weekend the I-70 Eisenhower Tunnel broke several traffic records.

About this time every year summer travel reached its peak. More people on vacation means more vehicles on the road. On Sunday, August 8th saw the highest number of cars pass through the Eisenhower Tunnel than ever before. 54,659 vehicles passed through in a 24 hour period. That broke the previous record of 54,061 which was set on July 31st, 2016.

That's a huge number of cars, trucks, RV's, and more. Not only did the tunnel set a record for the most cars in a 24 hour period.  It also set a record for the most over a 3-day stretch. Over that weekend, from Friday through Sunday, 157,657 vehicles made the trip through knocking off the old record of 153,503.

On that Sunday too saw the highest volume of vehicles in a one-hour period. The 1 pm hour that afternoon saw 4,892 zipping through the tunnel knocking off the previous record of 4,859 vehicles on July 31, 2016.

The Colorado Department of Transportation also reports that the toll lane for eastbound traffic is helping reduce congestion along I-70. The CDOT informs too that work to construct a westbound toll lane is scheduled to begin the fall of 2018.
