Deftones and Refused Take Hold of Coney Island in Brooklyn
The brand new Amphitheater at Coney Island in Brooklyn has been celebrating a busy summer of shows including a recent headlining gig for Deftones. Swedish punk rock act Refused and hometown sludge rock band Spotlights served as support for the show.
With over a 20 song setlist, Deftones fans were happy, sweaty and their voices were hoarse for the rest of the weekend. The set began with hard-hitting “Kimdracula” from their Saturday Night Wrist album, followed by “Swerve City” and a notable favorite “Diamond Eyes.” Frontman Chino Moreno stomped, jumped and even showed off some nimble dance moves with a two-step salsa around the stage. The singer also engaged with fans and got as close as he could to the front rows including yelling songs into their faces while they reciprocated singing right back. The music of the Deftones is complimented by some incredible production and lighting which highlights the layers of the music that can go from mesmerizing and melodic to complete chaos.
The band is touring in support of their new album Gore and they dished out new tunes such as the title track, “Acid Hologram” and “Hearts/Wires.” The best thing about seeing a show at Coney Island on a Friday night is that there are fireworks that come along with it. It just so happens if you looked to the right towards the ocean an abundance of fireworks lit up the night sky during another new song “L(MIRL).” The encore included older Deftones anthems “My Own Summer (Shove It),” “Rickets,” “Headup” and “Bored” to end the memorable night.
Refused took the stage just prior to Deftones and delivered a forceful set. The sensory overload that is red-suited frontman Dennis Lyxzen grabbed the crowd not only with his energy onstage but he commanded ears with some choice words about Donald Trump. Right before performing “Rather Be Dead," the singer leaped into the crowd. Refused have been keeping punk rock alive with their free spirit, spreading the gospel of liberty and self-respect. Their fast-packed tunes have the balls to say and do whatever they damn well please. By the end of their set, whether you know who they are or not, they gained numerous Deftones fans and they got a well-deserved standing ovation.
