A major Colorado attraction is getting close to reopening. Are you ready for a road trip?

According to its official Facebook page, Mesa Verde National Park is set to reopen on Sunday, May 24. The page states the park will reopen with "limited visitor services." What would those services include? According to the Facebook page, features that will be open include:

  • Morefield Campground
  • Far View Lodge
  • Outdoor spaces such as overlooks and trails
  • Mesa Top driving loop
  • Cliff Palace driving loop
  • Far View Sites
  • Park Point

Features that will NOT be open include:

  • Visitor and Research Center
  • Chapin Mesa Archeological Museum
  • Tours will not be available at this time

If you're looking to take a tour of the cliff dwellings, you'll have to put those plans on hold. According to their official webpage, tours will not resume until June 8, 2020.

When it comes to special conditions, the website posted the following:

The National Park Service encourages people who choose to visit the park during this pandemic to adhere to guidance from the CDC and state and local public health authorities to protect visitors, employees, and more vulnerable populations. Please avoid crowding and practice Leave No Trace principles. - Mesa Verde National Park via Facebook

In the Comments section of the Facebook post, someone asked if there would be limits on the number of visitors at the park. Mesa Verde Nation Park responded by saying, "...we are not placing limits on the number of visitors entering the park. Reservations are not necessary. Wishing you a safe visit!"

The webpage states that per current state recommendations, you will be required to wear a mask in common areas. If you don't have a mask, they will be available for purchase at all entrances for the low, low price of $3.

I called the park today to ask about the availability of camping spaces. If you call the park, please be prepared for a lengthy wait. Are you familiar with the common disclaimer, "Due to higher-than-normal traffic volume, your hold time might be longer than normal"? Well, in this case, they aren't joking.

To camp at Mesa Verde, you're look at a cost of $36 to $50 per day, depending on the site. Tent and Dry RV sites are $36, with Full Hookup RV sites at $50.

Here's your chance to get away for a bit. While some services at the park aren't available, most are. Social distancing guidelines will be observed. If you're suffering from cabin fever, perhaps a trip to these cliff dwellings is just what the doctor ordered.
