Colorado Woman Dies 14 Months After Surgery Leaves Brain Damage
,The woman, 19-year-old Emmanlyn Nguyen, of Thornton died October 4, after spending the final 14 months of her life in a coma. Nguyen went in for breast implant surgery on August 1, 2019 and was never the same again.
According to the Miami Herald, a lawsuit filed by the family says their daughter was not monitored for the first 15 minutes after being given anesthesia. The suit says the woman went into cardiac arrest twice and was stabilized both times, and though she was "neurologically unresponsive", there was no call to 911 for five hours.
According to the report, when 911 was called, the woman was taken to a local hospital where she stayed for 22 days before being transferred to Vibra Hospital of Denver, a long-term acute care and skilled nursing facility.
The family filed a lawsuit against the surgeon and the anesthetist for negligence. Reportedly, the anesthetist was involved in a similar case back in 2009 when a woman suffered brain damage during breast implant surgery and died.
It's a sad story with a tragic ending that reminds us of the potential danger of even the most common of surgeries.
